Dealing With Incontinence During the Holiday's

Dealing with incontinence during the holiday can be challenging. Keeping to a healthy diet and lifestyle can easily become interrupted with social gatherings and family gatherings. Drinking and eating holiday food in moderation can help.

Here are a few helpful hints to reduce your occurrence with incontinence during the holidays:

  • Stock up on pads, liners or briefs early and change regularly. Clean undergarments are fundamental to preventing UTI’s (urinary tract infections) and feeling confident.
  • Go to the bathroom whenever you have the opportunity, even if you don’t feel like you have to go.
  • Coffee, other caffeinated products and alcohol should be limited or avoided completely while shopping or traveling. Some of these beverages act as a natural diuretic. They can increase the frequency of urination.
  • Restrict fluids by waiting to have a beverage until you are in a location with bathroom access.
  • When taking your “water pill” also known as diuretic medication, get up earlier than usual and take this medication first thing. This way the effect of excessive urination will mostly be passed before you have to leave. DO NOT skip medications for convenience without consulting your physician first.
  • Moderation is the key word when it comes to eating during the holiday season. Limit the amount of foods with sugar and artificial sweeteners. This can be difficult to do with all of the holiday baking, but it is in your best interest! Limit the amount of spicy foods you eat as well.
  • UTI’s can be uncomfortable and make you have to urinate frequently. They also carry the risk of becoming severe, even to the point of hospitalization. Try cranberry recipes as your contribution for holiday meals. Cranberry can help ensure a healthy urinary tract and can help prevent UTI’s.

Holiday Recipe:

Cranberry Salad

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound fresh (raw) Cranberries
  • 1 ripe orange, peeled, seeded, and cut up
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 2 (8 ounce) cans crushed pineapple, drained
  • 1 (6 ounce) or 2 (3 ounce) Packages Jell-O Cherry Flavored gelatin
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 1 cup cold water

Preparation:

  • Wash cranberries and coarsely chop in food processor
  • Peel orange and remove as much white membrane as possible before chopping up into small pieces
  • Chop pecans (food processor works well)
  • Juice lemon
  • Drain crushed pineapple
  • Boil 2 cups water

Directions:

  1. In large bowl, combine Jell-O with sugar. Add 2 cups boiling water. Stir until gelatin is dissolved.
  2. Add remaining ingredients (add the 1 cup cold water last).
  3. Pour into a mold or glass Pyrex. Let chill in refrigerator until set.
